Device Supervision#

Introduction#

Most useful MDM features require the enrolled iPad to be 'supervised', and so WingMDM requires devices to be supervised in order to operate.

You can read more about device supervision at About Apple device supervision.

Depending on your existing setup, your device may already be supervised. You can confirm this by going to the settings page, and checking for the text This iPad is supervised and managed by ...

If that text exists, your device is already supervised and you can skip to Enrolling devices.

Non-enrolled devices#

If you enroll a device that hasn't been supervised, it will still be enrolled successfully but no config will be pushed to it. WingMDM will show a status message indicating as such.

Depending on your needs this may still be useful for device tracking.

Enabling supervision will wipe the device, once you have completed the process you can re-enroll it which will update the status in WingMDM.

In general it is more efficient to supervise your device first, then enroll it in WingMDM.

Enrolling your devices#

Supervising doesn't require Apple Business Manager (ABM). Instead, for most of our customers' usecases we recommend enabling supervision manually.

Warning

Swiftwing expects most of its customers to not be using ABM, and so WingMDM currently doesn't support this integration. If you're interested in WingMDM but currently use ABM, get in touch or fill out our contact form to let us know.

Supervision can be performed with a MacOS device using the Apple's own Apple Configurator app, or alternatively with iMazing on Windows:

During this process, you may be asked if you want to enroll in an MDM solution. You do not need to do this at this stage, this will be covered in Enrolling devices.

Once you've completed this step for all your devices, you will no longer need any desktop software.
